Cheapest to own, first

The True Cost Index

Pet tech pricing has a trick: the sticker is the smallest number you'll ever pay. We total three lines for every device — hardware at typical street price, 36 months of subscription at the plan-range midpoint, and 36 months of consumables — and rank by the only number that matters: what it costs to own.

How the model works

3-year total = device street price + 36 × (subscription midpoint) + 36 × (typical monthly consumables). Subscription midpoint averages the cheapest annual plan and the priciest monthly plan. Devices with optional subscriptions are totaled with the subscription included when the paywalled features are the product's main pitch — that's flagged on each receipt. Proprietary consumables (liners, filters you can't substitute) are flagged as lock-in, because a refill you can't shop around for behaves exactly like a subscription.

What jumps out

The × sticker column is the honesty metric. A device at 1.1× costs roughly what the box says. The required-sub GPS trackers run 4–8× their sticker over three years — the $50 collar is a down payment, not a price. Meanwhile the most expensive sticker in the database (the $699 Litter-Robot 4) lands mid-pack on true cost, because it charges no subscription and takes any clumping litter.
